NETWORK SELECTED AS CERTIFYING ORGANIZATION FOR NATIONAL VOLUNTEER PROGRAM

July 3, 2009-NETWORK received notice that it will begin recognizing the impact of volunteerism across the nation as a Certifying Organization for the President’s Volunteer Service Award, a program created by former President George W. Bush to recognize individuals, families and groups who meet the award’s requirements for volunteer service.

In Richardson, NETWORK joins Richland College as one of thousands of organizations nationwide selected to serve as a Certifying Organization for the award. In that role, NETWORK is responsible for verifying service hours, nominating potential recipients and delivering the awards on behalf of the current U. S. President.

“NETWORK is a legend in the local volunteerism arena," stated E. A. McDowell, President of the Network Board of Directors. "Thus, it is so appropriate that this program would give our organization such a national distinction and amazing responsibility."

The award is issued by the President’s Council on Service and Civic Participation, a group convened to help foster and encourage a culture of volunteer service and civic involvement. Chaired by two-time Super Bowl Champion Darrell Green, with former U.S. Senators Bob Dole and John Glenn as honorary
co-chairs, the council is composed of leaders in government, media, entertainment, business, education, nonprofit and volunteer service organizations, and community volunteerism.

The President's Volunteer Service Award

Recognizing and honoring volunteers sets a standard for service, encourages a sustained commitment to civic participation, and inspires others to make service a central part of their lives. The President’s Volunteer Service Award recognizes individuals, families, and groups that have achieved a certain standard – measured by the number of hours of service over a 12-month period or cumulative hours earned over the course of a lifetime.

To date, the President’s Council has partnered with more than 80 Leadership Organizations and more than 28,000 Certifying Organizations to bestow more than 1.5 million awards to the Nation's deserving volunteers.
